FLIGHT SAFETY AWARD

Canadian Forces Flying Training School, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan 1983

The Commander of Air Command Good Show Award is covetously reserved and only rarely presented to a pilot who when faced with a critical airborne situation demonstrates exceptional flying skills resulting in, "An Outstanding Contribution to Flight Safety." An account of which appears hereunder:

A CRITICAL IN-FLIGHT EMERGENCY

"On 7 September 1983, while on a local night training mission at CFB Moose Jaw, Captain Brasseur and her student were just turning downwind to base leg when their Tutor aircraft ingested a gull type bird directly into the right intake, severely damaging the compressor. Captain Brasseur quickly analyzed the situation as a birdstrike/compressor stall and carried out compressor stall recovery procedures while climbing towards the outer runway and declaring and emergency. After exchanging airspeed for altitude and establishing the best gliding speed, she advanced the throttle so see if the compressor stall had cleared. A small throttle movement confirmed that the engine was not functioning properly so she elected to stay with idle thrust.

From the angle the aircraft was approaching the runway, she found it difficult to see the omni-directional runway lights and had to rely on her skill to judge the final key position. Furthermore, the outer runway, which was closest, did not have approach lighting. Captain Brasseur skillfully judged the extension of landing gear and flaps to gain maximum gliding performance from her crippled aircraft. Of significant note, she also very closely monitored the aircraft speed and progress throughout the emergency and kept it well within egress parameters until the landing was assured.

Captain Brasseur acted promptly and correctly to this critical in-flight emergency. She is commended for her thorough knowledge of forced landing procedures which allowed her to safely judge the pattern and successfully recover an aircraft at night with a severely damaged engine. Without doubt, her skillful handling of a serious emergency resulted in the safe recovery of both crew and aircraft."
